When Ukrainians mistreat their own people
A solution to the Ukrainian humanitarian crisis that doesn't require Billions of Dollars in Western aid money
I recently met a man from the city of Lviv in Western Ukraine. Lviv (which is also my birth place) has always been the center for Ukrainian nationalism and anti-Russian sentiment. This gentlemen moved to Australia from the Ukraine over 30 years ago and returned to live in Lviv a few years back, only to return to Australia in 2022 not long after war broke out between Russia and Ukraine.
The man told me that the residents of Lviv mistreat the refugees from the east (their fellow countrymen) and there is tension and animosity between the two groups.
One cause for the tension is over the fact that most of the refugees from the East speak Russian while the residents of Lviv speak Ukrainian. The latter demand that the refugees speak Ukrainian only and refuse to deal with them if they do not comply.
Another cause for the friction is over the fact that the residents of Lviv are charging refugees exorbitant prices for rent (usually three to four times above market value). Most of the refugees are unable to afford to pay this exorbitant amount of money. Online news articles from the Ukraine appear to corroborate this man’s claim.
I was both surprised and outraged to learn this. I was surprised, because the residents of Lviv, are known for their patriotic nationalism for their country. So, the last thing I would expect, is to hear that they would take advantage of their fellow countrymen in need during wartime.
I was outraged because my hard earned tax-money is also going to the Ukraine (a country that is notorious for government corruption and financial mismanagement ).
Australia’s “benevolent” Prime Minister recently committed another $100 million to the Ukraine during the recent NATO conference in Lithuania. This is in addition to the $710 million Australia had already given to the Zelensky regime and the billions that other Western countries have poured into that country.
The fact that countries like Australia are experiencing an unprecedent economic and cost of living crisis - where entire families are homeless and sleeping out of cars - has not deterred the governments of these countries to be overly “generous” with the corrupt despots and oligarchs of the Ukraine at tax-payer’s expense.

I have a practical solution to the humanitarian crisis in the Ukraine - at a minimum, Western governments such as Australia must demand that the residents of Western Ukraine grant all refugees free accommodation. The rent must be fully subsidized by the Ukrainian government as a condition to receiving any aid money. However, during an economic crisis no Australian money should be going to that country or to any foreign country.
I will conclude this piece on a “light note.” The video below is mostly satire (but might based on some truth?). The video revolves around the following - a new campaign has been launched for Western countries to open up their hearts and wallets to save the Oligarch of Ukraine while their own countries are experiencing an economic crisis.
